An emergency beacon which was activated by mistake triggered a major search operation on the Menai Strait.

Emergency services were called out after the EPIRB was activated near Caernarfon at around 9.20am on Wednesday.

The RNLI’s inshore lifeboat from Beaumaris was joined by mobile coastguard teams from Bangor and Llandwrog and the coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon.

The search stretched between Y Felinheli and Caernarfon Bar, but when no sign of any vessel in difficulties was found, crews were stood down.

An RNLI Beaumaris spokesperson said: “Fortunately in this instance the beacon had been activated manually in error.”

”The EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacons) are carried on many ships and boats, and signal maritime distress.”

”It is activated by water when the beacon is out of the bracket or manually by the ON switch on the EPIRB.”
