A yachtsman was taken to hospital after he went overboard during a sailing race near Pwllheli.

Holyhead Coastguard received a mayday call at around 2.30pm on Friday afternoon following the incident off Gimlet Rock.

The second day of the IRC Welsh Championships were taking place in the area at the time.

The RNLI at Abersoch said the crewman had already been rescued by his colleagues when its inshore lifeboat arrived at the scene around 20 minutes after they were called out.

The yacht was escorted back to Pwllheli Marina with the casualty, who was said to be safe and well.

He was assessed by local coastguards from Abersoch before being taken by ambulance to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor for further checks.

Phil Wood, volunteer helm at RNLI Abersoch, said: “The crew of the casualty vessel were all wearing the correct clothing and lifejackets.”

”They conducted a very successful man overboard procedure to recover the casualty, a testament to their learning and knowledge for a safe outcome for all under pressure.”

“Making the mayday call was the right thing to do. If you would like to learn more about man overboard procedures you should contact your local RNLI station who will be happy to assist.”
