A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspected mortar bomb at a recycling centre near Menai Bridge.

The Penhesgyn site was closed following the discovery on Monday lunchtime with authorities urging the public to avoid the area.

The suspected device was safely moved to an isolated area at the recycling centre, before the bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion.

North Wales Police officers have now left the area and Anglesey Council has confirmed there was no immediate threat to the public.

The Penhesgyn recycling centre will reopen to the public on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for the council said: "North Wales Police EOD (Bomb Disposal Unit) have attended Penhesgyn recycling centre this afternoon and conducted a controlled explosion. Police have now left the area."

"Penhesgyn Recycling Centre will reopen as normal to the public tomorrow morning. Anglesey Council would like to thank North Wales Police for their support and quick response."
