An 82 year-old man from Holyhead was killed in the Lisbon funicular, police have confirmed.

David Young was onboard the Glória tram when it derailed and crashed into a building last Wednesday, killing 16 people.

Mr Young, who was raised in the Perthshire town of Auchterarder, moved to Anglesey in 1980, where he worked as a customs officer.

In a statement, Mr Young's family described him as "a lifelong transport enthusiast" who enjoyed visiting heritage railways and tramways around the world in his retirement.

They added: "It is a comfort to his sons, their mother, and his brothers that his final moments were in pursuit of the hobby which gave him so much happiness."

A North Wales Police spokesperson said Mr Young's family, who have asked for privacy, was being supported by specialist liasion officers.

The Plaid Cymru MP for Ynys Môn, Llinos Medi, described it as "very sad news", adding: "I would like to send my condolences to David Young’s family and to those who have been affected. My deepest sympathy goes out to you."

Ynys Môn MS Rhun ap Iorwerth said: "My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr Young, and everyone else impacted by the tragic events in Lisbon last week."

A Cheshire couple, Kayleigh Smith (36) and Will Nelson (44) were also killed in the crash, which led to three days of national mourning in Portgual.

An investigation into the crash has found a cable connecting the two funicular carriages had snapped and the breakman had tried to apply emergency brakes before it derailed.

But the national transport safety office said its investigation was continuing and a full preliminary report will be published next month.
