Holyhead's Empire cinema has been officially reopened following a £1.3 million revamp.

The Stanley Street centre, which is run by the town council houses one of the largest play centres in North Wales, as well as continuing to screen the latest big releases.

Since reopening to the public in July, the centre has attracted record visitor numbers.

Anna McMorrin, a junior Wales Office minister who visited the Empire on Friday, said: "The UK Government is investing directly in communities across Wales to improve local facilities, drive growth and create jobs."

“It is fantastic to see that our funding for the Empire complex is already helping to bring more visitors to Holyhead town centre, and we will continue to deliver regeneration for our local areas right across the country.”

New facilities at the Empire complex include a play frame designed to welcome more visitors, along with a rear extension offering a modern party room, kitchen and improved facilities such as a privat baby feeding room.

A new sensory room has also been added to offer a calm and inclusive space for individuals and groups.

The cinema has also been refurbished with new seating, a modern screen and sound system and updated decor, along with PV solar panels to reduce energy costs.

Cllr Cadi Evanson, the mayor of Holyhead, said: "The Empire complex is already proving to be a thriving success story for our town. The demand we are seeing here is a clear sign of how important this facility is to the heart of our community."

"On behalf of Holyhead Town Council, I would like to thank the contractors, architects and county council for their outstanding work in delivering the new extension."

“I’m incredibly proud of our town council for their dedication, commitment and vision in making this project possible with the support of UK Government funding. This is a real investment in the future of our town, and it is fantastic to see the results already paying off.”

The refurb was funded by the UK Government in partnership with Anglesey Council and Holyhead Town Council.

Funding was secured by the county council as part of its wider regneration programme for the island's town centres, which aims to boost the local economy and revitalise key community assets.

Anglesey Council leader Gary Pritchard added: "This investment is a fantastic example of how working in partnership can deliver real benefits for our communities."

"The Empire complex has already become a thriving hub for local families, businesses and visitors, and its success demonstrates the importance of investing in our town centres.”

The refurbishment work was carried out by local construction firm OBR on behalf of the town council, who own and operate the Empire.
